To G N. Hargrave

Dear Cousin it is with great sorrow that I take my pen in hand to write y
ou these few lines to let you know the sad tidings of the fate o four Dear Cousin James Hargrave. He was killed in Monticello Lawrence Co, Miss by one Henry Smith and two dupites who had him under arrest - it occured on the 7th March I received a letter from Mr. S_ _ yWallace of that county wh o was a warm friend deceased, Cousin and Smith had some little trouble between them which resulted in Smith swaring an affidavid against James and Had him arrested for slander the two depeties met James on the road to a Mr. Ballards and told him they had a warrrent for him, James was told it was all right to come to Mr.Ballards with him he would give Bond and go to town the nex t day they wanted him to give up his pistols he refused on their way to Ballards they had to pass Smithhouse one of the depites went in Smith's house and deptised Smith to help them to dissarm James. Smith came out with a gun and the battle commenced one of the depeties shot J ames and James shot Smith twice but only gave him one flesh wound. James had only two loads in his pistol. Smith shot him twice with his gun and dupites shot him five times inflicting twentyone bullet holes in James Body his last reques twas for Mr. Wallace to write to me to go after him he did not want to remain there he wanted to be buried at home, but I only received sad news yesterdy to late to do any thing. I writen to Wallace today to remark the place he was buried and take care of his grave so that if his people want him taken home we can find him . I have writen Uncle Lige please write to him in case my letter does not reach, all are well except myself my love to all Respectfully H. C. Harrington
