• Notes. #
From Bonnie Reach: I was told by my mother and Aunt that Elizabeth had driven a large wagon train from Indiana with children and slaves. (She came to Texas from Missouri). Early census records did not show her to be a slave holder, nor did the early tax records of Tarrant County. She was said to be wealthy and owned lots of land and cattle. Available records show she owned the 160 acres she received as a settler in Tarrant Co. and some other land. In 1863, she did have at least 100 cattle, per a Tarrant Co. deed. Tax records do not reflect great wealth. She was said to have owned a large part of Ft. Worth where the courthouse stands. The government owned the Fort and it was sold to others. Elizabeth did own a lot in the town of Weatherford near the courthouse, in Parker County. The feeling of this woman and my heritage from her persists none the less. She seemed a strong intelligent figure, who made life work for her. There was no menton of her husband. His name or fate was not told. She was a very early settler in Tarrant Co., but not the first.
# Note:
A deed in Tarrant Co. in 1863 shows a curious transaction. She sold her homestead claim and 100 cattle to a J.E. Chisholm (including G.M. Teague's claim, the lot in Weatherford, and 150 sheep) on August 17, 1863 and bought it all back on Aug. 19th for $10,000 (Confederate Money?), "to me in hand paid". She did appear to be comfortably well off.
# Note:
Elizabeth Bailes/Bales married William Teague in Monroe Co., Indiana, June 6, 1819 as recorded at Bloomington. There is a Susannah Bailes who married Bryant Teague Feb. 21, 1822, also in Monroe Co., Indiana, and in 1840, they are all probably all together in Pulaski Co., Missouri. Elizabeth and William seem to have left Indiana about 1834 for Missouri. In 1850, Elizabeth and some of the children were in Greene Co., Missouri, in present day Webster Co., south of Marshfield. There is a creek in this county that may have been named for them. There wer 12 boys and 2 girls listed in the William Teage household for 1840. Her age in 1850 was 56, and she had been born in Ohio. She is said to have moved west with her daughters. Deed records of 1876 in Travis probably bear out that she was with the daughters. Many of the Travis Co. Teagues are buried in the Tucker-Teague Cemetery in South Austin and Elizabeth may be there. The known children of Elizabeth do not match the census. Some may be other children or those of someone else.
